YouTube following Netflix will reduce video quality in Europe. The company did this to reduce the load on the Internet infrastructure in Europe, writes Bloomberg.
YouTube users will watch videos in standard definition by default instead of HD. The new rules will be valid for the next 30 days. At the same time, the company noted that they have not yet noticed a strong jump in the use of the service.
On March 19, 2020, EU authorities turned to Netflix and other streaming video services to lower the quality of clips to average. The main reason for the request was the increased load on the infrastructure of the European Internet due to global quarantine.
Netflix immediately announced a decline in video quality. According to the company, this will reduce by 25% the amount of traffic that European customers use at Netflix.
