Xiaomi patented a smartphone with a camera in a narrow screen frame

A number of companies are currently designing smartphones that have a front-facing camera directly behind the display. Chinese Xiaomi, according to the resource LetsGoDigital, has proposed an alternative solution.

Information about the development is published on the websites of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the European Patent Office (EPO).

Xiaomi suggests integrating a selfie module into a narrow bezel above the display. In this case, it will be possible to save the panel from a cutout or hole and not use a hidden subscreen camera.

Xiaomi’s solution envisages that the light through a tiny hole in the screen frame will be sent to the image sensor hidden inside the body using a prism or light guide.

Currently, however, a smartphone with the described design exists only in patent documents. About whether Xiaomi is going to create a commercial version of the device, nothing has been reported.

It should be added that Xiaomi may already release a smartphone with a sub-screen camera this year. Such a module is expected to receive the Mi MIX 4 device.
