WTO has established an arbitration group on the Russia-US dispute over duties on steel and aluminum

On 21 November the world trade organization, has established an arbitration team on the dispute of Russia against the United States because of the tariffs on steel and aluminum. This is stated in the Ministry of economic development.

“At the meeting of the dispute settlement Body of the world trade organization on 21 November 2018, the decision was made on the establishment of an arbitration panel in the dispute initiated by Russia to appeal to additional taxes in the United States against imports of steel and aluminum,” – said the press service of the Ministry.

In addition to Russia, China, India, EU, Canada, Mexico, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey appeal the duties. These disputes come to the stage of consideration by arbitration groups almost synchronously, in most of them the establishment of groups was also held on November 21, 2018.

In March, the US imposed duties on imports of steel (25%) and aluminum (10%). They apply to all countries, except Australia and Argentina. Brazil and South Korea were exempted only from steel duties. The Ministry of economic development estimated the damage from American duties on aluminum and steel at $ 600 million.

In response, Russia introduced additional duties of 25-40% on goods from the United States. They fell under some types of road construction equipment, oil and gas equipment and fiber optics.
