WikiLeaks founder Assange was arrested in London

The President of Ecuador said that it was decided to refuse the founder of WikiLeaks Julian Assange asylum. He spent seven years in the Embassy in London. British police said he was arrested.

The police announced that today Assange was detained at the Embassy of Ecuador. They reported that he was detained for violation of the bail regime in 2012.

“He was taken into custody at the Central police station in London, where he will remain until trial”, the report said. The police said that they were invited to the Embassy as soon as the government of Ecuador withdrew the asylum.

The President of Ecuador Lenin Moreno explained the government’s decision. According to him, he was promised that after the arrest Assange will not be sent to the United States.

“Ecuador has taken a sovereign decision to deny diplomatic asylum to Julian Assange for repeated violations of [the provisions of] international conventions”, he wrote on Twitter.

Later, British lawyer Jennifer Robinson said that his arrest is connected with the request of the United States.

“Just confirmed: Assange arrested not only for violating the conditions of bail, but also in connection with the US request for extradition”, she wrote. The police later confirmed this information.

Julian Assange has been at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London since 2012. He sought asylum to avoid deportation and arrest in Sweden, where he was accused of rape and coercion of sexual acts and harassment. In addition, Assange fears deportation from Sweden to the United States, where he faces a long prison term or the death penalty for the publication of secret documents of the state Department.
