Why iPhone production is recovering, but problems remain

The companies that organize and manage the production of all kinds of electronics in China – Quanta Computers, Wistron, Compal Electronics – announced on Tuesday about the miraculous healing of their production capacities and that by the end of March the world workshop will work at its full potential. A month ago, Foxconn promised that this would happen “by the end of February” – it is not surprising that few people believed the next optimistic statement. As it turned out, in vain. If it were not for the component problem, which is being gradually dealt with, factories in China would already be working at their full potential. Maybe not by the end of March, but soon it will be so. Here are just a rush of demand for their products, which had such hopes, may not be.

On March 11, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhan Gebreisus announced a pandemic outbreak of coronavirus infection. A pandemic is an unusually strong epidemic, massive and massive. The WHO uses this term very carefully, but it was necessary. Pandemics of cholera, plague, smallpox and influenza (Spanish) have claimed tens of millions of lives. For the first time, SARS (Acute Severe Respiratory Syndrome, the first outbreak of this viral infection occurred at the beginning of this century) was declared a pandemic.

The WHO Director-General has called for no panic, no infection, and no infection of others. There are no reliable means of fighting infection yet. They are working on their creation in an emergency mode, but there will be no vaccine against COVID-19 earlier than in a year or a year and a half, and it cannot take even longer to create and test effective drugs against this infection.

All Apple Store closed in Italy

Nevertheless, unlike the beginning of the last century, COVID-19 did not take us by surprise – the stupid (as is commonly believed) population knows what needs to be done to protect themselves, relatives and everyone around from this extremely unpleasant disease – it is not flu, in severe cases, the symptoms of COVID-19 are painful, and without modern medicine they would surely lead to a sad end. Awful. But humanity will cope with this. It remains a year (or two) to hold out.

Due to the pandemic and the severe epidemiological situation, demand for mobile devices and computers is expected to decline in some countries. It was expected that when the production of consumer electronics was restored and attractive new products appeared on the market, they would be swept away from the shelves like hot cakes – but whether these expectations will come true is a big question. In Italy, the retail Apple Store is temporarily closed. In countries with a tense environment (the number of infected is growing rapidly), sales are declining. People are not up to the “glands”.

When Apple Presents New Devices

Calling production problems “temporary,” Tim Cook, as it turned out, was right. The development of new devices (iPhone 9, AirTag, full-featured wireless headphones with active noise cancellation, iPad Pro, new MacBook Pro and MacBook Air) because of the virus ugliness not only did not stop – the developers had extra time to double-check everything that they “piled up”, and as you know, testing is never too much. There is reason to hope that products born “during the plague” will be better than usual. Hope. Improvements “at the last moment” – usually these are absolutely necessary minor corrections – the reason for almost all scandalous problems.

The new 13- and 16-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, with a probability of 99.999%, would be released in January-February this year, if not for force majeure. But apple laptops are made in China, in factories owned by Taiwanese company Quanta Computers, access to which due to quarantine has been limited all this time, and without the intense collaboration of all participants in the production process (Apple, Quanta, component suppliers, etc. ) A full-fledged launch of full-fledged new products is impossible.

You can’t do much remotely. Quanta factories have resumed production of their current models; by the end of March, production of the current MacBook Pro and MacBook Air will return to normal levels. About the launch of new models so far only known from rumors. Pah-pah-pah, this seems to be happening. Restarting the entire chain of component suppliers, where necessary, connecting spare options (and all this requires an eye and an eye) is not easy. Optimists promise the release of new products in March. Pessimists expect them in late April or early May. Somewhere in this range everything will be, unless some new muck happens.

Coronavirus greatly affected the work of Apple

iPhone 9 is also expected either in early April or in May. The forecasts about other new products are so different (in terms of time), and often it’s not clear what kind of device they’re talking about, I won’t even give them. In the second or third quarter (that is, either in the first or in the second half of the year).

Coronavirus latest news

According to the regular official report of the World Health Organization dated March 11, 2020, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 infection outside of China has increased 13 times over the past two weeks, and the number of countries in which such cases have been identified and confirmed has tripled. A total of 118 326 cases of COVID-19 infection were confirmed, of which 4 627 were infected in the last 24 hours. A total of 4,292 people died from COVID-19, 280 in the last 24 hours. The virus spread to 114 countries. Four of them, in China, Italy, Iran and South Korea revealed 90% of the number of cases of infection in the world. In China and South Korea, the spread of the virus slowed down, WHO experts checked the official data from these countries and confirmed their reliability. Where all necessary measures are taken, the virus recedes.

In 81 countries, no cases have yet been reported. In some of these countries there may be more than in China, there is simply no one to identify and confirm the diagnosis. A total of 37,371 cases of infection with this virus outside of China have been confirmed, this is almost a third of the number of cases (118,326). Of the 37,371 cases, 4,596 occurred in the last 24 hours. 1,130 people died, 258 of them – on the last day. Outside China, about 150 times more people were infected during this day than in China, and about 12 times more died.
