Careless use of antibiotics and antiviral drugs by the population against the background of a coronavirus pandemic may result in another, much worse pandemic. This was stated by the representative of the world health organization (who) in Russia, Melita Vujnovic, at a press conference on the eve of World AIDS day.
“Antimicrobial drugs and antibiotics are a very important issue. If we don’t use antibiotics carefully now (they should only be taken as prescribed by a doctor, and all doctors should only look very carefully at the recommendations, whether they are needed or not), then after the coronavirus, we may face a much worse pandemic. And this is a pandemic of microorganisms resistant to antibiotics and antiviral drugs,” she said.
According to Voinovich, in this case, people will have nothing to treat when infected with infectious diseases since antibiotics will be ineffective.
“Even though we almost won now. So now it is very important for us to understand that the coronavirus has given an impetus to re-examine the views on infectious diseases from both doctors and society,” she concluded.
