Carissa Etienne, head of the Pan-American health organization who PAHO/WHO, said that the organization’s budget consists of 60% of US contributions, the cancellation of funding will entail a significant reduction in operations.
“For a long time, the US has been the largest financial donor to PAHO/WHO and an important partner. At the moment, 60% of our budget comes from the United States. If the United States cancels its funding, technical cooperation between the participating countries will be significantly reduced,” Etienne said during a weekly briefing broadcast on the PAHO Facebook page.
US President Donald Trump has previously said that the country is ending relations with WHO because the organization “refused to carry out the required reforms.” According to him, the US “will redirect these funds to the whole world for urgent health needs.”
