German automaker Volkswagen accidentally revealed the new name. In the US unit, one letter will change – the new name will be Voltswagen. The rebranding should show how serious the company is about making electric vehicles. The CNBC portal noticed the press release on the official website.
The note was promptly removed from the website, and the company did not respond to media inquiries. However, Volkswagen sources confirmed that the renaming is indeed planned, and the publication came out a month earlier due to a technical error.
The changes are expected to take effect in May. The press release said the new name would appear on all-electric and gas-powered vehicles. In this case, the dark blue colour of the logo will remain on gas vehicles, and for electric vehicles, it will be changed to light blue. Volkswagen of America will become a division of the Volkswagen Group of America.
Volkswagen previously announced plans to become the global leader in electric vehicle manufacturing by 2025. The company wants to capitalize on batteries’ production and fully switch to modular production of electric vehicles based on the Modular Electric Drive Toolkit (MEB) platform. The latter will be deployed in Europe, China and the United States. Lansdowne Partners investment fund manager Per Lecander suggested that the active entry into traditional automakers’ market would be a serious blow to the current industry leader Tesla.
In January, it became known that in 2020 Volkswagen remained in second place in terms of sales globally, behind its main competitor, the Japanese concern Toyota.
