Workers dig mass graves on Hart Island (New York). The Guardian posted a video of the incident on its YouTube channel.
In New York, the number of coronavirus victims is growing, and the space of morgues is shrinking. As a result, the city is forced to reduce the time it will store unclaimed remains before they are buried in the public cemetery on Hart Island.
Cameras captured workers digging graves on the island, one mile from a restricted access lane near the Bronx. As a rule, about 25 bodies are buried on the island a week, mostly the remains of people whose families cannot afford a funeral, or those who were left unclaimed by relatives. Now burials are held not one day a week, but five and about 24 bodies are buried daily.
