US President: peace talks with the Taliban are going well

Donald Trump: the Taliban are “tired of fighting.”

US President Donald Trump said that negotiations with the Taliban are going well. He noted: “They are very tough, they are very smart. But (the war has been going on) for 19 years, and even they are tired of fighting.”

The United States and its allies stripped the Taliban of power in Afghanistan after the September 11, 2001 attacks. This week, the Taliban began peace talks with the Afghan government, with US Secretary of state Mike Pompeo attending the opening ceremony.

Trump has repeatedly expressed a desire to end the longest-running armed conflict in US history. The United States intends to complete the withdrawal of all troops from Afghanistan in May 2021, provided that the Taliban provides the necessary guarantees of compliance with its commitments.
