Thanks to the appearance of a hospital ship in New York Harbor, the city will have an additional thousand hospital beds.
The US Navy will send a thousand-ton floating hospital to New York Harbor to help the country’s largest metropolis in the fight against an outbreak of coronavirus.”This is an extraordinary step, of course. This is literally a floating hospital, and it will increase the number of beds,” New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a conversation with reporters.
Now, New York State has confirmed 2,914 cases of coronavirus infection – the most in comparison with other states. The state government has increased its capacity to test up to 15 thousand a day and expect the number of infected people continues to grow. About 23% of those infected are now hospitalized. According to the Governor, 108 patients recovered and were discharged from hospitals.
Cuomo said that he and President Donald Trump are “fighting the same war” and are “in the same trench.”
The Governor spoke about the results of his conversation with Trump who gave permission to proceed for the deployment of the USNS Comfort hospital ship in New York Harbor. In addition to thousands of hospital beds, the ship is equipped with several operating rooms.
Cuomo and New York City mayor Bill de Blasio have been saying for several days that the city’s hospital system could quickly become overloaded as the number of patients’ increases. They are looking for ways to increase the number of hospital beds and attract more doctors to work. Cuomo called on recently retired medical professionals to return to work.
“We can’t build new hospitals in 45 days,” Cuomo acknowledged. «the Federal government can be extremely helpful here. And we need the Federal government’s help.”
At a press conference in Washington, the President confirmed that he would send a floating hospital to New York, and praised the Governor for his efforts. The tone in which the Republican President and the democratic Governor communicate has rapidly warmed in just two days: the day before yesterday, Cuomo and Trump criticized each other on Twitter.
The Governor also announced new measures to be introduced in the state, which is home to 19.5 million people.
Cuomo said he would sign an Executive order requiring most companies to ensure that no more than half of their employees go to work. This shift to “remote” work will help reduce the number of people on the streets and slow down the spread of the virus. Grocery stores, pharmacies, and transportation companies will be exempt from this requirement
This week, the Governor ordered all bars and restaurants to sell only takeaway or home delivery items, and banned any gatherings of more than 50 people.
