US Ambassador to China to step down

Secretary of state Pompeo announced the upcoming departure of Terry Branstad.

US Secretary of state Mike Pompeo said on Monday that Ambassador to China Terry Branstad would leave his post.

“I thank Ambassador Terry Branstad for his more than three years of service to the American people as the US Ambassador to the people’s Republic of China,” Pompeo tweeted.

“Ambassador Branstad has helped restore balance in US-China relations so that they are result-oriented, reciprocal, and fair,” he added.

Pompeo did not specify why the diplomat was leaving the job. Citing an unnamed source, CNN reported that Branstad is likely to leave Beijing before the US presidential election in November.
