United Airlines to pay US Department of Justice

The airline agreed to pay the fine to avoid prosecution.

United Airlines has agreed to pay $ 49.5 million in exchange for the dismissal of criminal charges and the dismissal of civil lawsuits in the case of fraud with contracts for the carriage of international mail.

The US Department of Justice announced this. The agency said that the airline “for several years provided false information about the delivery of goods to the US Postal Service (USPS), accepting millions of dollars in payment for this.”

As part of the agreement, the Justice Department agreed not to bring criminal charges against the airline.

According to US authorities, United Airlines has fired the employee responsible for creating the fraudulent scheme and hired external legal and accounting consultants to check the accounts and comply with the terms of government contracts.

The airline will also provide annual reports to the US Department of Justice.

Representatives of the airline welcomed the agreement, saying that they “corrected the procedures” that had been criticized and “hope to serve the Postal Service in the future.”

The Ministry of Justice clarified that the fraud occurred in the period from 2012 to 2015.

In 2019, American Airlines agreed to pay $ 22.1 million to the US Department of Justice, which was convicted of providing incorrect reporting on mail transportation.
