The report was published on the website of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.
As of April 17, 2021, 25 647 objects are known to be close to the Earth.
Earlier, in 2020, astronomical observatories from more than 40 countries collected data on almost 39.5 million records of observations of asteroids and comets, and also found that 2,959 objects were approaching the Earth – a record number.
In this case, the orbit of 2,180 asteroids in the list passes at a distance of no more than 8 million km from the Earth’s orbit.
It is estimated that only about 40% of the sizeable near-Earth objects have been identified.
