The organizers of the competition for the development of greenhouse gas capture technologies have announced two winners. Both of them are making concrete to capture CO2.
The XPRIZE winners have come up with a technology to create concrete that captures carbon dioxide. He keeps it in himself in order to reduce the concentration of this substance in the atmosphere. It is worth noting that the production of cement – the main ingredient in concrete – accounts for about 7% of global greenhouse gas emissions. This was stated by Marcius Ekstavour, Vice President of XPRIZE, the initiator of the climate and energy competition.
The winner of the $ 20 million competition was announced at the beginning of the week, and another competition for the organization is scheduled to start on Thursday. This time the initiative will be supported by businessman Elon Musk. The entrepreneur promised $ 100 million to those scientists whose projects will help capture CO2 from the atmosphere and store it for a long time.
The two top winners are CarbonBuilt and CarbonCure Technologies. They will split $15 million among themselves and spend it on improving and scaling up their technology for the production of carbon dioxide capture concrete. The remaining $ 5 million was split among 10 other finalists.
CarbonCure Technologies has come up with a technology that adds carbon dioxide to the water used to flush cement trucks and mixers in a cement plant. As a result, a mixture is obtained from which a more durable concrete is obtained. Los Angeles-based CarbonBuilt used carbon dioxide to cure concrete. This process has helped to emit fewer greenhouse gases compared to traditional cement production techniques.
