Turkey and the US seek to achieve progress in the negotiations on the S-400

The Minister of national defense of Turkey, Hulusi Akar stated that the parties shall make every effort to resolve problems.

Representatives of the military departments of Turkey and the United States will continue negotiations to resolve problems in the supply of American fighters of the fifth generation F-35 and the acquisition by Ankara Russian anti-aircraft missile systems S-400. This is stated in the statement issued on Saturday by the Minister of national defense of Turkey Hulusi Akar on the results of negotiations with the acting US defense Minister Patrick Shanahan in Washington.

“We exchanged views and information on the F-35 and s-400, and agreed to continue negotiations on these topics and do everything possible to resolve problems between our countries. We will try to achieve some progress in the coming days, ” Akar said.

In November 2016, it became known about the negotiations between Turkey and Russia on the purchase of S-400. The fact of the contract was confirmed by the Russian side on September 12, 2017, at the same time the Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the advance on the contract has already been made. Turkey will be the first NATO state that receive the S-400 from Russia, the number of supplied complexes was not officially specified.

The assistant Secretary of state for Europe and Eurasia Wess Mitchell June 26, 2018 warned that Turkey’s acquisition of the S-400 will lead to the application of sanctions by Washington against Ankara and a qualitative change in bilateral relations. In addition, as Mitchell stressed, the United States may refuse to transfer to Turkey acquired her F-35.
