Trump urged General Motors to curtail production in China and increase in the United States

The US President Donald Trump believes that the automotive concern General Motors (GM) should stop assembling cars in China and instead increase production in the United States. This trump said on Monday in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.

The head of state said that on Sunday evening he had a conversation with General Motors CEO Mary Barra, who spoke about the plans of the auto giant to reduce production in Michigan and Ohio, as well as in Canada. “They [GM] would be better to open a new plant there,” trump said. “I love Ohio. I told them that they are flirting not with those with whom it is necessary”, – he added, meaning, according to the newspaper, China.

“I said that I heard that they are closing the plant. I hope that it will not stay closed for a long time, because otherwise you, Mary, will have problems,” the publication quotes the President of the United States, who stated a conversation with the CEO of the auto giant. Trump also recommended Barra to transfer enterprises in the US from the production of unprofitable models of cars to the production of high-demand brands.

As previously reported by the newspaper, General Motors plans to reduce 15% or more than 8 thousand employees at its enterprises in North America as part of the business reorganization. In particular, the number of executives will decrease by 25% – this, according to the company, will make the decision-making process more effective. As reported on the GM website, in 2019 the factories in Detroit and Ohio, as well as in the city of Oshawa (Ontario, Canada) will be closed. Two more businesses outside North America may be closed.

Reuters, citing sources, reports that GM will stop production for the US six unpopular models-Chevrolet Volt, Chevrolet Impala, Chevrolet Cruze, Cadillac CT6 and XTS, as well as Buick La Crosse. The company expects that these measures will allow by the end of 2020 to increase free cash flow to $6 billion and reduce costs by $ 4.5 billion.

General Motors is one of the largest automakers in the world. The company’s production facilities are located in 30 countries.
