Trump suggested sending Americans with COVID to Guantanamo

Former US President Donald Trump offered to send Americans infected abroad to the Guantanamo naval base in Cuba, writes The Washington Post.

The publication adds that such a proposal was allegedly made in the first days of the pandemic at one of the discussions on whether to return citizens who fell ill abroad to the country.

“Don’t we have our own island?… And what about Guantanamo?” – this, as journalists write, was what Trump was interested in at the time.

It is noted that his assistants were surprised by such an idea. When Trump spoke about it again, they rejected it, fearing a negative reaction to the fact that American tourists will be quarantined at the same base where international terrorism suspects are held.

The newspaper said that the material was prepared based on the book by the publication’s journalists Yasmina Aboutaleb and Damian Paletta, “A Nightmare Scenario: the Trump administration’s response to the pandemic that changed history.”
