US President Donald Trump has notified Congress that he intends to fire the Inspector General of the US intelligence community, Michael Atkinson, who handled the complaint of an informant that initiated the impeachment process, the Washington Post reports, citing a letter from the President.
Last November, the New York Times reported, citing a source, that Trump is considering firing Atkinson, as he does not understand why he told about this complaint. At the same time, other sources of the newspaper noted that, although trump did express such an idea, “the dismissal of Mr. Atkinson was never seriously considered.”
As the Washington Post reported on Saturday, Trump sent a letter of intent to Congress on Friday evening.
“It is extremely important that I have full confidence in the appointed persons who are acting as inspectors General. The situation is different with regard to this inspector General,” the newspaper quotes from the letter.
