On Wednesday, November 13, US President Donald Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hold talks at the White House. The talks are taking place against the backdrop of a serious complication in relations between the two countries, related to the actions of the Turkish military in Northern Syria, as well as Turkey’s purchase of Russian S – 400 SAMS.
Before the talks, President Trump noted that the ceasefire continues to operate in Northern Syria. He also said that the withdrawal of us military posts in the area of the Turkish-Syrian border was the right decision.
Trump also said he was ready to increase trade with Turkey by $ 100 billion. “Today, the trade turnover between the United States and Turkey is $ 20 billion. I am sure that we can bring this figure to the level of 120 billion dollars a year,” Trump said.
Erdogan, in turn, promised that he would comment on all issues at a press conference following the talks with Trump.
Turkey’s October military operation in Syria has caused tensions not only between Washington and Ankara but also in relations between Turkey and its regional allies and neighbors. Nevertheless, Turkey is giving a strong rebuff to criticism over its actions in Syria.
The meeting between Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Donald Trump in the oval office of the White House lasted 1 hour and 15 minutes.
The meeting was attended by the presidents ‘ spouses, as well as Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, Turkish presidential Press Secretary Ibrahim Kalyn, US Secretary of state Mike Pompeo and US national security adviser Robert Charles O’Brien.
Currently, Erdogan and Trump take part in a working lunch with the participation of delegations, followed by a joint press conference.
