The President said the US would “significantly” reduce its military presence in Afghanistan.
US President Donald Trump on Thursday arrived on an unannounced visit to Afghanistan to visit the US military stationed in the country on Thanksgiving.
The American leader said that Washington has resumed peace talks with the Taliban, reports The New York Times. “We will see if they (the Taliban) to agree, ” – he said, speaking at the airbase in Bagram.
The President arrived at Bagram air force base accompanied by national security adviser Robert O’Brien, a small group of aides, Secret service agents and a pool of journalists.
Based on Bagram Trump held a bilateral meeting with President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani and delivered to the US military.
In the dining room of the airbase, the President, according to the established tradition, served roast Turkey to the military approaching him, and then the head of state shared a festive meal with the audience.
The President added that he was continuing to implement a plan to reduce the military contingent in the United States from the current 12 thousand to about 8,600 soldiers, stating a “significant” reduction in the number of American troops in Afghanistan. At the same time, Trump added that the US would remain in the country “until we make a deal [with the Taliban] or win a complete victory.”
According to the Associated Press, the President flew to Afghanistan from Florida, where he was celebrating Thanksgiving at his Mar-a-Lago estate, according to reporters. At the same time, the plane on which Trump flew to Florida from Washington remained on the tarmac of the West Palm Beach airport to avoid leaking information about the President’s movements.
According to White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham, the trip to Afghanistan was planned a few weeks ago.
“This is a dangerous zone, and he wants to support the military. He [the President] and Mrs. Trump know that a lot of people are away from their families during the holidays, and we thought it would be a pleasant surprise,” Grisham said.
The visit was carried out in an atmosphere of absolute secrecy necessary for national security. Journalists accompanying trump were not allowed to disclose information about the trip until the release of the official white house message.
