The White House is concerned about reports of the deterioration of Navalny’s health

Washington called on the Russian authorities to ensure the safety of the imprisoned opposition leader.

The White House on Wednesday expressed concern over reports of the deteriorating health of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny and called on the Russian authorities to ensure his safety.

“We are concerned about reports of Mr. Navalny’s deteriorating health. We call on the Russian authorities to take all necessary measures to ensure his safety. While he is in prison, the Russian government is responsible for his health and well-being,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said at a press briefing.

The jailed opposition leader went on a hunger strike last week to protest the prison authorities ‘ refusal to provide him with proper treatment for acute back and leg pain.

On Tuesday, it became known that Navalny was transferred to a medical unit after complaining of a cough and a high temperature. Earlier in the day, Navalny said that three prisoners from his squad were hospitalized with suspected tuberculosis on his Instagram.

On Wednesday, Navalny’s lawyer said that he had been tested for COVID-19, which negatively affected him.
