Washington believes that the tanker plans to deliver oil to Syria in the interests of the IRGC.
The United States informed the Greek government of its “tough stance” on the Iranian tanker, which went to Greece on Monday after being released from custody in Gibraltar. According to a senior official of the US Foreign Ministry, the tanker plans to deliver oil to Syria.
Any effort to assist the tanker can be seen as providing material support to an organization that the US considers terrorist, the US official added.
The ship “Adrian Darya 1”, formerly known as “The Grace 1”, left the Gibraltar area late on Sunday. The Refinitiv vessel tracking system indicates that the vessel is heading for Greek Kalamata and is due to arrive at the port of destination next Sunday.
The representative of the state Department noted that the tanker helps the Islamic revolutionary guard Corps, which the United States considers a terrorist organization, transporting oil to Syria.
A senior State Department official noted that the United States had expressed its “tough stance” to the Greek government, as well as to all Mediterranean ports, regarding any assistance to the tanker.
