The United States supports an independent international assessment of the elections in Belarus and calls on Moscow to “respect the sovereignty” of Minsk. This was stated at a briefing for journalists by White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany.
— We continue to monitor developments in Belarus closely, and we support international efforts to provide an independent assessment of election violations, human rights violations, and the use of harsh measures by the authorities,” she said.
McEnany noted that “the huge number of Belarusians who are peacefully protesting shows that the government can no longer ignore the people’s calls for democracy.”
“Russia must also respect the sovereignty of Belarus and the right of its citizens to freely and honestly choose their leaders,” the spokeswoman added.
Earlier, the EU announced that it does not recognize the results of the presidential elections in Belarus. They also said that sanctions would be imposed against those found guilty of violence and electoral fraud.
