According to Elliott Abrams, the events in Venezuela will not develop in the same way as in Syria.
The US special representative for Venezuela Elliott Abrams believes that the President of the Bolivarian Republic Nicolas Maduro will be removed from power earlier than within one year. With this statement Abrams spoke on Sunday on CNN.
The diplomat was asked about the possibility that Maduro will remain the leader of the state a year later. “I deeply doubt that it will be so”, he replied. “I very much doubt that a year later we will talk about it”, Abrams added.
The US special representative also at the request of the journalist explained why, in his opinion, the events in Venezuela will not develop in the same way as in Syria.
“One of the factors that causes concern in the case of Syria, but not in the case of Venezuela – is the presence of thousands and thousands of foreign fighters,” said Abrams. “There are thousands of “Hezbollah” and Iran fighters in Syria. In Venezuela, you will not see this”, he added.
Speaking about the prospects for a change of power in Venezuela, Abrams said: “We did not expect that this would happen quickly. This will happen when the pressure increases to a certain extent”. According to the diplomat, either Maduro and his entourage will consider that “their time is up” or “the Venezuelan military will come to the belief that they need to remove Maduro”.
