The US Secretary of state Michael Pompeo on Tuesday made an unexpected visit to the capital of Iraq and demanded the Iraqi government to respond to the “threat” from Iran to ensure the interests of the United States.
Explaining the purpose of his sudden visit to Iraq, Pompeo noted that the Iranian armed forces are increasing their activity, and the threat of their attack is “clear” and “approaching.”
After a meeting with Iraqi President Barham Salih and Prime Minister Adel Abdel-Mahdi, M. Pompeo told the media that he stressed the importance of ensuring American interests in Iraq.
The US Secretary of state expressed concern that the Shiites, who make up the majority of Iraq’s population, are closely connected with Iran in the sphere of religion. According to him, in order to ensure the security of Iraq, the US is persistently asking the Iraqi government to control all forces associated with Iran in religion.
