The US Secretary of state Michael Pompeo called for the participation of the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the formation of political structures in Syria after the end of hostilities in the country. He said this in an interview with Fox News, published on the website of the channel.
The Secretary of state was reminded that his predecessor as head of the state Department Rex Tillerson stated that Bashar al-Assad had no political future in Syria. Pompeo asked whether he shares the opinion Tillerson.
In response, according to the channel, he said that the “Assad regime” will participate in the negotiations. However, Pompeo negatively described the role of Iran and Russia in the situation in the Middle East.
“We want to make every effort to open all options when the political negotiations begin,” the head of the state Department said.
“We hope that we will be able to gather all the bad players in the region, Russians and Iranians, as well as the regime Assad and all other interested parties to meet and discuss what may be the political structures in Syria after the civil war,” — he said.
According to Pompeo, the decision on who will lead Syria will be made by the Syrian people ultimately.
