An incident involving a Su-35 fighter jet occurred over the Mediterranean Sea.
The US armed forces reported a dangerous approach with a Russian fighter jet over the Mediterranean sea – this is the second such incident in the region in the past four days.
The Navy statement did not specify where the rendezvous occurred but said it happened over international waters. According to several websites that track aircraft movements, the incident occurred in the Eastern Mediterranean, near the coast of Syria.
According to the Navy, a Russian Su-35 fighter jet twice came close to an American P-8A observer plane. The second time, the distance was less than 8 meters.
“The second interception was deemed unsafe and unprofessional,” the statement said.
A similar incident occurred in the same area on April 15, according to the Navy.
The Russian Defense Ministry on Monday published a statement on Facebook confirming the approach and saying that the fighter was lifted from the Hmeimim airbase in Syria. No additional details are specified.
The P-8A Poseidon is an anti-submarine patrol aircraft.
The Syrian port of Tartus hosts a significant Russian naval contingent in support of Russia’s air and land operations in Syria.
Aircraft of the United States, NATO and Russia are often found in the airspace around the world.
Russian long-range bombers regularly fly close to the borders of NATO member countries, and American observation planes fly close to Russian waters in the Baltic and Black seas.
