The US promises to continue talks with Iran on the nuclear deal

The US will continue negotiations with Iran on a return to the 2015 nuclear deal under its new leadership, a State Department official has promised.

Washington commented on the results of the presidential election in Iran, which was won by the Chairman of the Supreme Court, Ibrahim Raisi.

“We will continue to discuss with our allies and partners the issue of a mutual return to compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),” the diplomat said, and expressed regret that “the Iranians were denied the right to choose their leaders based on a free and fair electoral process.”

Raisi is under US sanctions on charges of harassing and executing political prisoners in the 1980s. During the election campaign, he promised to fight against poverty and corruption and build a “people’s government for the sake of a strong Iran.”
