The issue of Russia’s return to the “Big seven” can be discussed at the next summit. The administration of US President Donald Trump stated.
The US is waiting for a request from Russia, the White House stressed. “This issue may be raised, but the key factor here is that Russia itself did not ask for a return, so I think that this should happen first,” the administration noted.
“We believe that the issue of participation or non-participation of Russia will be discussed by the leaders”, — said the representative of the administration. At the same time, we should not expect a vote on this issue, since the G7 works on the based on consensus. At the same time, the American leader said he wanted to revive the G8.
French President Emmanuel Macron proposed to invite Russia to the G7 summit in 2020. US President Donald Trump agreed with him, noting that the organization discusses many things that directly concern Moscow. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that “the arguments in favor of the return of Russia has yet to be found.” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke sharply against such a step.
The G8 format ceased to exist in 2014 after the annexation of Crimea to Russia. Then the leaders of the leading world powers refused to participate in the G8 summit, which Russia as Chairman was to hold in Sochi. Instead, the G7 meeting was held in Brussels (France, UK, USA, Germany, Japan, Italy, and Canada; the presidents of the EU Council and the European Commission also take part in the summit).
