The US imposes new sanctions on Iran

The sanctions are directed against the Fund linked to Ali Khamenei.

The United States on Wednesday announced a new broad package of sanctions against Iran. The sanctions target a Fund controlled by Iran’s top leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The sanctions imposed by the US Treasury Department represent the next stage of strengthening the campaign of “maximum pressure” on Tehran, which is being conducted by the administration of President Donald Trump.

According to the Finance Ministry, the sanctions affected the Mostazafan Foundation, which is controlled by Khamenei, as well as 10 individuals and 51 organizations that are associated with this Fund.

The Foundation, which bills itself as a charitable institution, has amassed vast wealth to the detriment of the rest of the Iranian economy and controls hundreds of companies and properties confiscated after the 1979 Islamic revolution.

“Iran’s top leader uses the Mostazafan Foundation to reward his allies under the guise of charity,” US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement. – The United States will continue to take measures against key officials and sources of income that allow the regime to continue its repression of its own people.”

The Finance Ministry also imposed sanctions on Iranian Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi, accusing his office of involvement in serious human rights violations against Iranians, including during the November 2019 protests.
