The son of Iran’s spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei also came under sanctions.
WASHINGTON – Washington has expanded the sanctions list against Tehran, including the General staff of the Iranian armed forces, as well as nine citizens of the country, among them the son of the spiritual leader of Iran Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Mojtaba Khamenei and other high-ranking representatives of the Iranian authorities. The press service of the US Treasury Department reported on Monday.
The list, in particular, includes the chief of the General staff of the Iranian armed forces Mohammad Hossein Bagheri, his Deputy Golyam Ali Rashid, adviser on International Affairs to the head of Iran Ali Akbar Velayati, Chairman of the Supreme court of Iran Ebrahim Raisi, former defense Minister Hossein Dehghan, as well as a number of military, clerics, politicians and government representatives.
“Today, the Treasury Department imposes sanctions against unelected officials who are part of the entourage of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and pursue destabilizing policies,” said US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.
“You probably also drew attention to the fact that today we impose sanctions against Mojtaba Khamenei – the second son of the leader and spiritual leader of Iran,” – said in turn at a telephone briefing for journalists, a representative of the American administration of high rank. “He works closely with the commander of the al-Quds special forces [Iran’s revolutionary guard Corps-elite units of the armed forces, General] Qassem Suleimani, as well as with the [paramilitary militia] Basij, promoting his father’s destabilizing agenda throughout the region, “he claimed.
Getting on the sanctions list means freezing assets in the US and banning American citizens or companies from doing business with its defendants.
