The US has offered Russia cooperation in the fight against the terrorist group “Islamic state” in the South-West of Syria, controlled by the Syrian authorities, said the US special representative for Syria James Jeffrey.
According to him, South of the Euphrates, the forces of the Syrian authorities are limited by the General attention to Idlib in the North-West of the country, and this allows the IS to raise its head in this area.
“There are not many (Syrian) forces left in the Southwest, in the Badia desert, to deal with IS. We are very concerned about this. We have seen that ISIS increases its regional presence there, even attacks cities, and can hold territory for at least a short time. This has to stop. We offered to cooperate with the Russians on this issue,” Jeffrey said.
At the same time, he claims that in the Northeast, controlled by US-allied formations, there are no such problems yet.
“We do not believe that IS have managed to seriously exploit the COVID crisis to advance in the northeast, though… the area around Deir Ez-Zor has become, in today’s language, a “hot spot,” and we are closely monitoring this, but we are confident that everything is under control there,” said Jeffrey.
