UN – The United States has contributed about $ 563 million to the UN budget over the past weeks, but this amount does not fully cover the debt of the United States to the organization, spokesman for the UN Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric said at a briefing.
In October, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres informed representatives of the New York diplomatic corps about the serious deterioration of the financial situation of the organization. As of October 9, 2019, more than 50 member states, including the United States, have not paid contributions for the current year to the budgets of the world UN. The organization was even forced to reduce certain activities and move to a lean mode of operation of the headquarters in New York.
“In recent weeks, the US has made several contributions in the amount of approximately 563 million dollars. Thus, they have paid their regular budget contributions in full over the years,” Dujarric said.
At the same time, he noted that he “needs to check how much they still owe for this year.” “But we are extremely grateful for the partial payment of contributions,” he added.
In October, UN assistant Secretary-General Chandru Ramanathan revealed to journalists the number of debts owed by States to the organization. He said the US owed $ 674 million this year and $ 381 million in previous years to the regular budget.
The total debt under the regular budget was $ 1.385 billion, he said. At the same time, he said at the time that 97% of this amount owed seven States: the United States, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Iran, Israel, and Venezuela.
