The US has not ruled out sanctions against Egypt for the purchase of Russian weapons

The US can impose sanctions against Egypt if it buys Russian military aircraft, said the representative of the American White House at a briefing. It was dedicated to the upcoming meeting of us President Donald trump with his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, which will be held today, on April 9.

According to the law “On countering U.S. enemies through sanctions” (CAATSA), adopted in 2018, Washington may impose sanctions against foreign companies “for significant transactions by organizations from the Russian defense or intelligence sector”. As explained by the representative of the US administration, the American authorities “there isn’t great flexibility within the law CAATSA”.

“Countries that make such orders (for the purchase of weapons) should know that we are very limited in how to mitigate the consequences of the application of the CAATSA law. We already have this situation with China, with India, with Turkey which is a NATO ally. So we would like to urge countries which want to maintain and expand their relations with the US in the military sphere to take this law very seriously,” the White house representative explained.

As reported earlier Russia and Egypt have signed a contract for the supply of “over two dozen” Su-35 fighters and means of aviation defeat to him in the amount of about $2 billion Contract came into force in late 2018, and deliveries can begin in 2020-2021 years. “Rosoboronexport” at the same time denies the existence of a contract for the supply of Su-35 to Egypt.
