The US has created an intelligence unit to combat domestic extremism

Combating this phenomenon is one of the priorities of the Biden administration.

US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas announced that his department has created a special intelligence unit to combat violent extremism inside the country.

The new unit “will ensure that the expertise needed to combat this threat is developed using reliable and timely information,” Mayorkas said at a hearing before the Senate Appropriations Committee.

The decision was made amid concerns about the growing threat of domestic terrorism.

Law enforcement agencies have warned that an attack by supporters of former President Donald Trump on the Capitol could embolden extremists. President Joe Biden has declared the fight against domestic terrorism one of the priorities of his administration.
