The White House called on Moscow to “act responsibly” after a cyberattack on the largest US pipeline operator, the Colonial Pipeline.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) previously confirmed that the operator was attacked using the DarkSide ransomware. The investigation is ongoing. According to US President Joe Biden, the organizers of the cyber operation may be in Russia, although there is no evidence of Moscow’s involvement.
“Given that the FBI has determined that the attack originated from Russia, this country must act responsibly,” presidential spokeswoman Jen Psaki said at a regular briefing.
At the same time, she stressed that the analysis of what happened has not yet been completed. The pipeline downtime has already led to higher wholesale gasoline prices in the United States. The EPA regulator has suspended some standards to help the fuel market. US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm urged residents not to create a stir around fuel and stressed that the authorities will punish speculation.
