The US extradites former concentration camp guard to Germany

The US has extradited 95-year-old concentration camp guard Friedrich Karl Berger to Germany, the US Justice Department said.

“Today, a Tennessee resident with German citizenship was exiled to Germany for participating in Nazi–sponsored acts of persecution while serving as an armed guard at a Nazi concentration camp in 1945,” the department said in a statement.

It is clarified that the expulsion of Berger “demonstrates the desire” of the US Department of Justice to ensure that the States are not a haven for participants in Nazi crimes against people and violations of their rights.

An immigration court in Memphis, Tennessee, ordered Berger to be sent to Germany in February 2020. In November, the Appeals Board upheld the decision.
