The United States calls on Germany to send ground troops to Syria to fight the “Islamic state” and protect the Kurds from Turkey. This was in an interview with Die Welt magazine said the US special representative for Syria James Jeffrey.
He said that the assistance that is now provided by Germany — equipment and military instructors — is not enough and the US needs the German infantry to replace in the North-East of Syria part of the American troops operating there. He did not give an exact figure but mentioned that hundreds of soldiers would be required.
At the same time, according to Jeffrey, Germany may not have to enter into an open confrontation with the IG: the main thing that the German armed forces are needed for is to become a barrier between the Kurdish armed groups and the troops of Turkey, which officially considers the Kurds terrorists.
ISIS militants, according to the US special representative, will be pushed back by local Syrian forces. However, German soldiers must be well armed and “ready to defend themselves,” the diplomat added.
The German authorities received a proposal from Jeffrey to send the military, but have not yet released any official response. Washington is waiting for a decision from Berlin in July.
The expansion of the international presence in Syria is part of the US plan for a final settlement of the conflict. It also provides for the final destruction of the IS and the launch of the process of political reforms.
