The US court demanded more than $ 5 million from Snowden

A US court requires Edward Snowden to hand over to the US government $ 5.2 million received for the book “Permanent Record,” as well as any future income related to it, and speaking fees, the Ministry of Justice said in a statement.

The court ordered the recovery of more than $ 5.2 million from Snowden. The Justice Department said in a statement that any other income and royalties that Snowden will receive from the sale of the book, as well as income from his 56 public appearances, must be transferred to the US government.

“Edward Snowden violated his obligations to the United States, and his illegal financial profits should be turned over to the government,” Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen said.

The Ministry of Justice said that this claim is not related to another request in disclosing classified information.

In June 2013, Snowden gave the Washington Post and Guardian Newspapers some secret materials about the surveillance programs of the US and UK intelligence agencies on the Internet. He flew to Hong Kong and then to Moscow, where he spent some time in the transit zone of Sheremetyevo airport.

Russia has granted Snowden temporary asylum for a year to stop his activities against the United States. In August 2014, Snowden received a three-year residence permit that allows him to travel not only in Russia but also abroad. In January 2017, Snowden’s residence permit was extended until 2020. In April, lawyer Anatoly Kucherena said that Snowden had applied for an extension of his residence permit in Russia for another three years.
