The US Congress begins the procedure of impeachment of US President Donald Trump. The speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi stated, reports CNN.

“The President must be held accountable. No one can be above the law, ” she said.

“Today I am announcing that the House of Representatives is launching a formal impeachment investigation. I instruct our six committees to begin conducting their investigations,” Pelosi said.

In the case of impeachment of Federal employees, including the President of the United States, accused of “treason, bribery or other serious crimes and offenses” removed from office.

Trump himself called what is happening a witch hunt. Earlier, the 45th US President said that the impeachment procedure would only benefit him. “In our country, things are better than ever, they (Democrats) will lose the election,” he said.

For impeachment to take place, it is necessary that, after an investigation in the Chamber of representatives, an indictment be issued, which the Senate will then consider. 2/3 of senators have to vote. The majority in the Senate now belongs to Republicans.

In the history of the United States have been cases when initiated the impeachment of the head of state: against Andrew Johnson in 1868, Bill Clinton in 1998-1999 and Richard Nixon in 1974. The Senate acquitted Johnson and Clinton; Nixon resigned without waiting for consideration.
