The US announced new large-scale sanctions against Iran

The sanctions are aimed at countering the nuclear threat and the proliferation of missiles and conventional weapons.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the introduction of new large-scale sanctions against Iran. “The Trump administration has made clear that the United States will do everything possible to prevent the Islamic Republic of Iran, the world’s leading sponsor of terrorism and anti – Semitism, from spreading death and chaos throughout the Middle East and around the world,” Pompeo said. “Instead of waiting for the day when Iran will threaten the world with nuclear weapons, the United States, continuing the tradition of American global leadership, is taking responsible actions.”

“Today, under the leadership of President Donald Trump, the State Department, the Treasury Department, and the Commerce Department took important actions to counter the nuclear threats from Iran, as well as the proliferation of missiles and conventional weapons,” the Secretary of State said. – In each of these areas, the Islamic Republic of Iran poses a unique threat to the world. The regime uses its nuclear program to blackmail the international community and pose a threat to regional and international security.”

According to Pompeo, Iran has the most massive ballistic missile force in the Middle East. It supplies missiles and technology to players such as the Houthis in Yemen and Hezbollah in Lebanon and Syria.

“Over the past year, the United States and its partners have repeatedly intercepted Iranian weapons directed at the Houthis, demonstrating that the regime continues to use its arsenal of conventional weapons to destabilize the Middle East and incite sectarian violence and terrorism throughout the region.”

As the Secretary of State emphasized, the sanctions demonstrate that the United States will not hesitate to confront threats from Iran.
US President Donald Trump has issued a new executive order on Iran-related conventional arms shipments. “The UN arms embargo on Iran is being extended indefinitely, and we guarantee that it will remain in force until Iran changes its behavior. The new executive order gives us the tools to hold accountable entities seeking to evade the embargo,” Pompeo explained.
In accordance with the new decree, the State Department added to the sanctions list the Ministry of defense and logistics of the armed forces of Iran, the organization of the defense industry of Iran, and it’s Director Mehrdad Ahlagi-Ketabchi, as well as the Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro.

The State Department and the Treasury Department imposed sanctions on six individuals and three entities associated with the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran.
Five other individuals associated with the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran have been added to the Ministry of Commerce’s sanctions list.

The Ministry of Finance has added three individuals and four organizations linked to the Iranian industrial group Shahid Hemmat, which deals with liquid-fueled ballistic missiles, to the sanctions list.

“We will continue and expand our sanctions until Iran is ready to complete comprehensive negotiations aimed at eliminating the regime’s malicious behavior,” Pompeo said. – We are always open to diplomacy with Iran, but Iran must respond with diplomacy, not with escalating violence, bloodshed, and nuclear extortion. Until then, the maximum pressure will continue.”

The sanctions against Iran were announced at a press conference held on Monday at the US foreign Ministry.
