The United States conducted new tests of the AGM-183A ARRW hypersonic missile. In the photographs presented, you can see a perspective product in detail.
The creation of the AGM-183A ARRW hypersonic missile is one of the most important defense projects in the United States. As it became known, on July 8, new tests of this weapon took place. The photos shown once again confirm the previously announced information.
According to the US Air Force, the tests involved a Boeing B-52H Stratofortress bomber from the 419th Test Squadron. It took off from the Edwards Air Force Base in California. Two AGM-183A prototypes were suspended on external holders, one of which was equipped with an IMV-2 telemetry unit. The second, in turn, received some details of the control system. The missiles were not dropped.
Successful testing brings ARRW closer to its first launch. According to the US Air Force, they may be held at the end of 2020. The first half of the 2020s was previously named as a possible date for the adoption of the complex.
The tests carried out now are not the first for ARRW. Last year, the Americans showed a mock-up of the AGM-183A, suspended under the wing of a B-52 Stratofortress.
According to previously announced data, the ARRW complex consists of an air-launched solid-propellant rocket equipped with a hypersonic unit with a Tactical Boost Glide rocket engine. The detailed characteristics of the product are kept secret, however, according to unofficial information, the unit can accelerate to a speed of M = 20. Earlier, probably, the United States has already conducted its tests.
The tests carried out now are only part of the US efforts aimed at creating hypersonic weapons. It is known that such systems are being developed for the Ground Forces and the Navy. Hypersonic systems are created around the Common Hypersonic Glide Body (C-HGB) project – a warhead launched using a ballistic missile. Recently, the Americans showed the test result of the C-HGB: in the video, in particular, you can see the flight of the missile and the moment the target is hit.
We could see a demonstration of what will conceptually represent a complex for the Ground Forces earlier this year. Within the framework of the project, it is proposed to use a double transport and launch container. Some of the technical solutions were borrowed from the Patriot air defense system.
