US Secretary of state Michael Pompeo said that the US should not allow the completion of construction of the Nord stream-2 gas pipeline. He said this in a lecture in London.
“Russia wants to build “Nord stream- 2″ in order to use energy as a lever of pressure on Europe. We should not allow it to continue the implementation of the project,” he stressed.
On May 3, the US threatened sanctions against German companies for participating in “Nord stream- 2”, recalling that the pipeline would increase the dependence of EU policy on Russia.
“Nord stream -2” is a gas pipeline project from Russia to Germany, which is being laid on the bottom of the Baltic Sea. It will pass through territorial waters or exclusive economic zones of Finland, Sweden, and Denmark.
Ukraine and the Baltic States oppose the construction because of fears of reducing the volume of gas transit. The United States has repeatedly threatened sanctions to the project and its European participants, in parallel lobbying for the supply to Europe of its own liquefied natural gas, which is more expensive than the Russian pipeline.
