The US may impose duties on France in response to the European country’s plans to impose an additional tax on companies providing digital services. It is reported with reference to the statement of the trade representative of the United States Robert Lighthizer.
According to him, Washington is extremely concerned that the tax, which is likely to be approved by the French Senate, is unfairly directed against American companies. In particular, we can talk about such IT giants as Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google.
In this regard, the United States initiated an investigation, which will result in a decision on the introduction of retaliatory measures. According to Bloomberg, countermeasures may be similar to those taken by Washington against Chinese companies, in particular, Huawei.
French tax on digital services will be 3 percent per annum on the income of digital companies, whose annual sales exceed 750 million euros worldwide and 25 million euros in France. It is expected to be approved at the meeting on July 11.
