The coronavirus outbreak is getting out of control, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said at a press conference.
“The COVID-19 pandemic is a crisis unlike any other in our lifetime, and this year’s General Assembly session will thus be unlike any other,” he added.
The Secretary-General noted that humanity would soon overcome the milestone of a million lives lost due to the coronavirus, and called the pandemic the “number one threat” to global security.
According to Guterres, many are pinning their hopes on a vaccine, but there is no panacea for the pandemic. He stressed that the vaccine alone would not eliminate the crisis.
“But the vaccine should be seen as a global public good because COVID-19 knows no borders. We need a vaccine that is affordable and accessible to everyone – a vaccine for people,” the Secretary-General added.
He called for a significant increase in the use of new and existing tools to help fight the disease and provide life-saving treatment, especially over the next 12 months.
