The UN financial crisis: no money for peacekeeping operations and the salaries of employees

The UN is facing its deepest financial crisis in a decade. Only at the end of October, the organization will miss 600 million dollars. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated, presenting the member countries of the UN draft budget for next year, the press service of the organization reported.

“This month we will face the deepest financial crisis in the last decade,” the Secretary-General said. — We risk running out of cash reserves for peacekeeping operations, and in November we will have nothing to pay salaries.”

The reason is that despite the expansion of programs and new initiatives, the budget of the organization has not increased compared to last year. Also, not all countries pay their membership fees on time.

To close the financial holes until member countries paid their contributions, funds earmarked for peacekeeping operations had to be spent. “Today, this source of cash has almost dried up,”- Guterres said.

The budget of the organization, we recall, consists of contributions from member countries. The amount of the contribution is calculated based on the volume of the economy of the state. There is also a separate budget for peacekeeping operations. Although the financial year is already ending, only 129 out of 193 countries have fulfilled their financial obligations.

“The situation would have been much worse if I had not cut spending since January,” the UN chief added. “Without these measures, we would not even have enough funds to ensure the opening of the General Assembly in September and hold high-level meetings.” Guterres said that due to insufficient funding in the New York headquarters, as well as the UN offices in Geneva, Vienna and Nairobi will not hold events after six in the evening now.

The UN Secretary-General called on all member countries to pay their membership dues on time and in full.

The organization’s budget for 2019 is about $ 3.3 billion, while contributions have been made less than $ 2 billion.

The largest defaulter is the United States. The country owes about 380 million dollars in past years and has not paid 670 million for the current year. Donald Trump calls the contribution excessively high and calls for reform.

The budget for UN peacekeeping missions is formed separately and for the current year is 6.7 billion dollars and for the next-6.5 billion. The United States accounts for 28% of this amount, but Washington wants to pay only 25%. At the same time, the American side has not yet closed the debt of $ 2.4 billion.
