At the West-2021 exercises, Russia and Belarus will work out a guerrilla war with the North Atlantic Alliance. The columnist writes this of the American edition of The National Interest, Mark Episkopos.
The journalist believes that a large-scale conflict with the West cannot be called the main goal of the maneuvers, a significant part of which will take place “in an urbanized area.”
“According to experts, this choice can be explained by the fact that Russia is preparing for a guerrilla war with NATO,” the article says.
Expert Michael Kofman suggested that the West-2021 will consist of two stages. In the initial phase, the mobilization and deployment of Russian and Belarusian troops will take place in the first days of the alleged invasion of U.S. forces and their allies. In the second phase, Moscow will use the full range of weapons available to it to defeat a conditional enemy, the expert noted.
According to the columnist Episkopos, Poland, Latvia, and Ukraine have expressed “serious concern” about their security due to the Russian-Belarusian maneuvers. However, there are no signs that Moscow is using them to cover up military intervention in neighboring countries, the author concluded.
The West-2021 exercises will be held on September 10-16. As the first deputy head of the Main Department of International Military Cooperation of the Ministry of Defense, Major General Yevgeny Ilyin, explained earlier, in addition to the Russians, the contingents of nine countries-Armenia, Belarus, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Serbia, Tajikistan, and Sri Lanka will be represented at them.
The observers will be representatives of the armies of Vietnam, China, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan.
