The U.S. has begun to transfer additional troops to Kabul

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said that the transfer of additional U.S. forces to Afghanistan has begun and should be mostly completed by the end of the week.

The United States is temporarily deploying 3,000 military personnel (three battalions) at the Kabul airport to facilitate the export of American civilian personnel, primarily diplomats, from the country.

“The movement of troops, which we announced yesterday, is happening right now. Part of one of the Marine infantry battalions is already there, in Kabul; the rest of the forces will arrive in the next couple of days. I assume that by the end of the weekend, the bulk of these three thousand, which we talked about yesterday, will be in place,” Kirby said.
