The United States is considering new sanctions against Belarus. Secretary of state Mike Pompeo stated, commenting on the detention of one of the leaders of the Belarusian opposition, Maria Kolesnikova.
“The United States, in coordination with our partners and allies, is considering additional targeted sanctions to ensure accountability for those involved in human rights violations and repression in Belarus,” he said.
Pompeo expressed concern about reports that Kolesnikova was “kidnapped” and tried to forcibly remove to the territory of Ukraine along with other representatives of the opposition Coordination Council.
On Monday morning, Kolesnikova, Kravtsov, and Rodnenkov stopped communicating. Their associates stated that, according to some reports, in the center of Minsk, Kolesnikova was detained by unknown people, put in a minibus, and taken away in an unknown direction.
